Anishinabek Nation Government

Union of Ontario Indians

The Anishinabek Nation incorporated the Union of Ontario Indians (UOI) as its secretariat in 1949.  The UOI is a political advocate for 42 member First Nations across Ontario.  The UOI is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.

The Anishinabek Nation territory encompasses First Nations along the north shore of Lake Superior and surrounding Lake Nipigon, the north shore of Lake Huron, Manitoulin Island, east to the Ottawa Valley, and through the south central part of Ontario to the Aamjiwnaang First Nation.

Tribal groups represented within the Nation include Ojibway, Odawa, Pottawatomi, Chippewa, Algonquin, Mississauga, and Lene Lenapi (Delaware).

The Anishinabek Nation consist of four areas, which corresponds to Treaty boundaries:

  • Northern Superior Region (Thunder Bay, E. to Wawa)
  • Lake Huron Region (Sault S. Marie, E. to North Bay, S. to Parry Sound)
  • South East Region (Central Ontario)
  • South West Region (Western Ontario)

The Anishinabek Nation represents approximately 30% of the total First Nation population in Ontario and 7% of the total First Nation population in Canada.
